I’m a historian of the ancient world at Yale, where I work on Ptolemaic Egypt, the economic history of the premodern world, and the long relationship between climate and human societies. Much of my research sits where the papyri meet the ice cores, reading ancient documents alongside the paleoclimate record to understand how societies weathered environmental shocks.

Here you’ll find my books and writing, current projects including the Yale Nile Initiative, and conversations about why the deep past matters for the climate future. Thank you for stopping by.
