Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
Working Group Member, 2025 - Present
The VICS working group supports research focused on past explosive volcanism to better understand how both the climate system and human civilizations respond. This knowledge is then used to assess the potential impacts associated with future large volcanic eruptions that could affect our changing climate and modern globalized societies.

The main goals of the current phase of the working group are to:
-
Support proxy-based investigations of volcanic eruptions and their environmental and climatic impacts
-
Support interdisciplinary approaches to draw out new historical data to understand societal impacts of past eruptions
-
Develop forward-looking models and scenario exercises to understand present and future volcanic risks
